Welcome to Why I WAH

When I was thinking of an appropriate name for my blog, I decided on Why I WAH for the simple reason that I'm not only trying to be successful at working from home, but I want to help others do the same. It is not always easy to work from home no matter what anyone says. You have to have the drive and dedication to getting the job finished. Many times you will not have a boss breathing down your neck to finish an assignment. So, you also have to think about why you want to WAH, as well, and hold that close to give you the perseverance to work at it.

Convergys

UPDATE:  Please see this link for the new page describing the opportunity and states it is available within.  This link will take you to the hiring page.  You can enter home agent into the search terms to find the openings for the WAH opportunities.

As I have stated in previous posts my life is not one that can currently take advantage of phone jobs. This is one company that I have come across during my search over the past few years for legitimate WAH opportunities, but I have no experience working for them myself. If you have, please feel free to post your own views in the comments area. Unlike many WAH opportunities Convergys actually considers their home workers employees, which means that they will pay taxes out of your salary and give you a W-2 at the end of the year like most regular employers outside of the home. This also means that they offer a benefits package! This is really exciting as many times you will not find this with WAH companies. Before you start jumping for joy you are going to want to make sure that your state is one that they hire in (for any international readers, they do hire in the UK and Nova Scotia in Canada). The list of states is located under the FAQ of Employment Eligibility - http://careers.convergysworkathome.com/WAHFAQ.aspx#Links and after you check to see if your state is listed then be sure to check the Technology Requirements as well. Keep in mind that if there is something that you have to buy to update your current home office they will not reimburse you for that, which includes your internet service and phone bills. However, speak with your tax professional as you may be able to write these expenses off at the end of the year. When in doubt keep your bills and receipts and ask your tax preparer about them.
There are no fees involved with getting hired by this company. They have full time and part time positions available so you can expect to work anywhere between 16 to 40 hours a week. This company pays every two weeks as you earn an hourly wage. They do not mention how they make payment, but it is probably by check or direct deposit. What you will be doing while working for Convergys is taking inbound calls for their clients. These calls may be sales calls, customer service or even technical depending on what position you apply for. You are paid for training with the company as well. Be aware that they will also be running a background check on you during the employment process as well since you will be coming in contact with personal information during your work.
Pros –
  • Actual employee (rather than a 1099 independent contractor)
  • Free to work for
  • Pays twice a month
  • Full and part time positions available
  • Inbound rather than outbound calling
Cons –
  • Must follow a schedule
  • Not everyone will be approved
  • Technology requirements
Phone jobs are not for everyone, but this seems to be a company that really appreciates their workers. When my situation changes to such that I am able to apply for phone jobs this is certainly a company that I would give a try. Again, if you have any experience with this company or apply feel free to leave your own comments and insights below for your fellow WAHers.

New Year, New You

It's already the second of the year, and there's no time like the present for getting your career goals in order.  It's easy to let things come up that cause you to fall off track.  Your family.  Your friends.  Even the job that you have can present stumbling blocks if you are looking to get something bigger and better for yourself.

When you create your resolutions for the coming year, there are several things you want to do with them.

1. Make them realistic, but not so easy that you aren't challenging yourself.
2. Create a timeline or schedule of when you need to achieve parts of your goals to make yourself accountable for yourself.
3. Reward yourself.  Don't neglect setting up points in your timeline for when you can reward yourself for hitting those targets.

As my first post of the year, here are some of the most popular blogs from previous years that are currently open to hiring.

Good luck to you in the new year with all of your WAH goals.

Skyes Home Powered by Alpine Access

Thanks to the success of my post on Convergys, I decided to focus on another phone job.  Welcome to my post on Skyes Home Powered by Alpine Access.  Again, this is not something that I have had a chance to apply for or work as my home is not set up for any phone work with two kids and two dogs that do not provide a quiet work environment.  They are currently hiring, so I figured I would pass it on.  Please feel to comment if you have worked or work for this company or message me in private if you prefer.  Unlike many of the WAH jobs I post, this company will actually treat you as an employee rather than a freelancer.  Breaking this down, it means that you will be a W-2 employee where taxes are taken out of your check, and you can be eligible for benefits.  This company only hires in certain states in the U.S. and 8 providences in Canada (sorry to all my other international readers).  Now, as with most other WAH jobs this does require you to provide your own equipment, and they have requirements to ensure that you will have the right equipment to get the job done.  This should be checked before you apply.  The company also does not reimburse you for your internet service or your phone bill.  Again, this is why it is important to have a tax professional to speak with as these expenses may be able to be written off of your taxes as business expenses.  Make sure to keep your equipment receipts and service bills just in case they are able to be written off of your taxes.
If you receive a job offer, there is one fee required as they run a background and credit check which will be $45.00.  They do not count many things as negatives on your credit check (like medical bills), so this may not be as dire as it sounds if you have been out of work for a while.  They have both full-time and part-time positions available.  Benefits, such as insurance coverage, are available through the company, as well as other benefits like a 401(k) after a person meets the eligibility.  Payment is direct deposit (so make sure you have an account that offers direct deposit), and occurs every two weeks.  The average base pay is $9.00 an hour.  The nice thing is that you get paid for the hours worked rather than just the times you are on the phone.  It is only for inbound calls, and they have a variety of clients they provide services to, so you may have a variety of types of calls to take.
Pros –

  • Employee rather than freelancer
  • Direct Deposit
  • Get paid every two weeks
  • Benefits available
  • Full and part time positions available
  • Inbound calling only

Cons –

  • Fee for background check
  • Schedule
  • Requires certain technology and service requirements
  • Lengthy application process

Overall, if you are in a position where a phone job would work out well, then check out this company.  The pros certainly seem to outweigh the cons in this one.  I’d love to hear from anyone with some experience with them.

Don't Just Order Grubhub, Work for Grubhub Through NexRep

NexRep is currently hiring call center agents to work from home taking calls for various clients.  This particular opportunity is for GrubHub.  You’ll be speaking with both restaurants and customers that need help with GrubHub.  This particular opportunity requires nights and weekends as this is when more calls are coming in.  If you enjoy talking to people and helping them to solve their problems, this could be an excellent WAH opportunity for you to explore.  Note: GrubHub isn’t the only client they are currently hiring for, and you can explore some of the others if you’d rather have more of a sales call or have the potential for more money.

Pros:
  • Requests 20 hours a week minimum
  • Hourly pay
  • Pretty open call hours as it’s 6 in the morning until 3 in the morning Eastern Standard Time every day of the week
  • Low on the scale for sales skills
Cons:
  • Doesn’t take agents from several states including AR, CA, IL, IN, NY, OR, RI, WA
  • You’re a contractor, not an employee
  • Background check required which you have to pay for at $25.00
  • Pay for each Nexrep client may vary, no pay listed for GrubHub
  • Requires a high amount of skills for customer service, so you’ll probably be interacting with customers and restaurants that are having issues
  • Requires quiet working space
  • Specific home office equipment, including computer and high-speed internet

I believe that this sounds like a worthwhile opportunity to check out.  Although my kids are finally in school, the hours they require still wouldn’t be quiet enough for me to apply, but I think that there are plenty of people that might make good use of this WAH call center opportunity.  Have you worked for NexRep before?  Have you applied?  We want to hear from you!  Comment below on your experience.

Be sure to check out my posts on Convergys and Skyes Home for other phone opportunities.
