Welcome to Why I WAH

When I was thinking of an appropriate name for my blog, I decided on Why I WAH for the simple reason that I'm not only trying to be successful at working from home, but I want to help others do the same. It is not always easy to work from home no matter what anyone says. You have to have the drive and dedication to getting the job finished. Many times you will not have a boss breathing down your neck to finish an assignment. So, you also have to think about why you want to WAH, as well, and hold that close to give you the perseverance to work at it.

TranscribeMe! Review

Quick Update:
I originally mentioned last week that I would be featuring a phone job since those seem to be very popular, but I had some family events come up that prevented me from getting to my blog.  As a freelancer, it is important to learn about being flexible and prioritizing.  Clients always come first in my book as an agreed upon deadline is set in stone, but family is just as important to emphasize in life, and that can be hard when you work at home.  Now on to the WAH opportunity...

Today’s post is about TranscribeMe! and is a transcription company that does not require any previous transcription experience.  This is a great place for someone who is thinking of taking a medical or legal transcription course to try out because it gives you some experience to see if this is a good job fit for you before forking out the cash.  They do not specify if they hire globally, but as they are looking to expand the languages offered to their clients, it is a good possibility.  No special equipment is needed as some may require a foot pedal, but the better your computer speakers are the easier the files will be to understand.  This is an opportunity where you will listen to an audio file, and then type it up following their specific style guide.  There are no fees to be hired by this company, but there is a short test that needs to be completed after filling out the application form.  The good news is that a failed test will not bar you from trying again.  You have the option to retake the exam after a 24 hour period of time.  The files that I have worked so far are about a minute long, and were pretty clear to understand.  The website you work from is called the WorkHub and is user-friendly.  They pay every week on Monday through PayPal as long as you hit the threshold of $10.00, which ends up being about an hour of audio files as the rate is $20.00 per audio hour.  Don’t confuse that with the time it takes to transcribe as that is probably going to be longer than a minute.  Also, your work can be rejected if you do not follow their style guide, and although I have not had any work rejected, I believe that it does not get added to your earnings.  Your earnings will not disappear if you do not hit the threshold in a week, but will roll over until you hit it.  They do not require you to work any minimum amounts, and you can work as much as you like as long as there is work available.  There were a few times that I logged in where there was nothing available right away.  One very neat thing about this company is that they have a “water cooler” discussion forum where freelancers are able to chat with each other and with the company.  I’ve been lurking for a while, and get daily emails of a sample of recent posts.

Pros –

  • Free to work for
  • Pays weekly
  • No minimum amount of work required
  • Work whenever you are able to work
  • Water cooler environment

Cons –
  • Must pass a test
  • Poor speakers on your computer may make it hard to work
  • No guarantee in the amount of available work when you are available
  • Files can be rejected

Overall, I believe that this is a great opportunity for those looking to get acquainted with transcription or just want to make a bit of money working from home.  Just be sure to follow the style guide, and ask questions in the water cooler forum.
