The first thing I did when I started working from home was selling on eBay. Everybody has heard about the success others find on eBay, and that it is very easy. The truth of the matter is that selling on eBay really isn't easy. It does take hard work to get good results. First, you have to decide on what you are going to sell, how you want to list it, and if the amount you have invested in the item will actually give you a profit after purchase price, eBay fees and PayPal fees. Not to mention having to go through the process of taking pictures, writing an accurate description, weighing it for shipping, and deciding on what shipping choices you are going to offer. This is not to say that you can't be successful on eBay. You just need to be aware of what you are getting into. As with many WAH choices the quality you put into your work will reflect on the money you make.
When I started with eBay I sold book lots of four books by either the same author or in the same subject matter. Once in a while if I came across a series I would post all of the series in one lot. At times I would have some amazing sales. I had found some old science fiction/fantasy series that were complete and when all was said and done they sold for much more than I expected. Of course, for every great sale there would be ones that were a bit of a disappointment. For the most part I was able to make profit on some of my postings because I was able to find books cheap at garage sales, library book sales, and my own personal bookshelf. After a while I started buying broken jewelry that I could fix and resell. This all worked to my favor, but the amount of time it was taking to post my descriptions, take good pictures, and everything else just started to take its toll. I still use eBay from time to time, but I've grown away from it as some of my sources had raised their prices.
If you are thinking of trying out eBay make sure you do your homework first. Decide on what you are going to want to sell. It can help to have a niche. Once you have decided on that you can go to eBay and look over past sales of items in that niche. This can be really helpful for you to decide how much you want to spend on getting your inventory. Also, look over current posts and maybe even watch some to see how they end. This can help you determine how you want to make your posts look, and what you want to offer. If you don't have a digital camera you may want to invest in one. Having good quality pictures can assist in your sale. Another option you can think about to help with sales is offering free shipping. Depending on what you sell free shipping can be a good selling point for you over other eBayers, but if it destroys your profit margin then it might not be for you. There are a lot of decisions to be made when selling on eBay, but these decisions are what will define your personal success.
