Welcome to Why I WAH

When I was thinking of an appropriate name for my blog, I decided on Why I WAH for the simple reason that I'm not only trying to be successful at working from home, but I want to help others do the same. It is not always easy to work from home no matter what anyone says. You have to have the drive and dedication to getting the job finished. Many times you will not have a boss breathing down your neck to finish an assignment. So, you also have to think about why you want to WAH, as well, and hold that close to give you the perseverance to work at it.

Convergys

UPDATE:  Please see this link for the new page describing the opportunity and states it is available within.  This link will take you to the hiring page.  You can enter home agent into the search terms to find the openings for the WAH opportunities.

As I have stated in previous posts my life is not one that can currently take advantage of phone jobs. This is one company that I have come across during my search over the past few years for legitimate WAH opportunities, but I have no experience working for them myself. If you have, please feel free to post your own views in the comments area. Unlike many WAH opportunities Convergys actually considers their home workers employees, which means that they will pay taxes out of your salary and give you a W-2 at the end of the year like most regular employers outside of the home. This also means that they offer a benefits package! This is really exciting as many times you will not find this with WAH companies. Before you start jumping for joy you are going to want to make sure that your state is one that they hire in (for any international readers, they do hire in the UK and Nova Scotia in Canada). The list of states is located under the FAQ of Employment Eligibility - http://careers.convergysworkathome.com/WAHFAQ.aspx#Links and after you check to see if your state is listed then be sure to check the Technology Requirements as well. Keep in mind that if there is something that you have to buy to update your current home office they will not reimburse you for that, which includes your internet service and phone bills. However, speak with your tax professional as you may be able to write these expenses off at the end of the year. When in doubt keep your bills and receipts and ask your tax preparer about them.
There are no fees involved with getting hired by this company. They have full time and part time positions available so you can expect to work anywhere between 16 to 40 hours a week. This company pays every two weeks as you earn an hourly wage. They do not mention how they make payment, but it is probably by check or direct deposit. What you will be doing while working for Convergys is taking inbound calls for their clients. These calls may be sales calls, customer service or even technical depending on what position you apply for. You are paid for training with the company as well. Be aware that they will also be running a background check on you during the employment process as well since you will be coming in contact with personal information during your work.
Pros –
  • Actual employee (rather than a 1099 independent contractor)
  • Free to work for
  • Pays twice a month
  • Full and part time positions available
  • Inbound rather than outbound calling
Cons –
  • Must follow a schedule
  • Not everyone will be approved
  • Technology requirements
Phone jobs are not for everyone, but this seems to be a company that really appreciates their workers. When my situation changes to such that I am able to apply for phone jobs this is certainly a company that I would give a try. Again, if you have any experience with this company or apply feel free to leave your own comments and insights below for your fellow WAHers.

  2. I actually never worked for Convergys. I did know a few individuals that did. This was one of the first WAH opportunities that I looked into, but with little kids phone work isn't something that I can do right now. Good luck to you! I'm glad that you were able to get hired. Keep us posted on how you like it.
