Welcome to Why I WAH

When I was thinking of an appropriate name for my blog, I decided on Why I WAH for the simple reason that I'm not only trying to be successful at working from home, but I want to help others do the same. It is not always easy to work from home no matter what anyone says. You have to have the drive and dedication to getting the job finished. Many times you will not have a boss breathing down your neck to finish an assignment. So, you also have to think about why you want to WAH, as well, and hold that close to give you the perseverance to work at it.

Dealing with Outside Influences

Yesterday I wrote about how to balance your WAH positions and your life outside of work.  My biggest suggestion is planning and having a schedule or to-do list.  However with outside influences in your life there is always a chance that things are not going to go as planned.  Here is a little story to explain what I mean:  Yesterday, I was minding my own business working on of my WAH positions.  My husband was home doing some home improvement work downstairs in our dining room.  Things are going great and then bam!  The power goes out.  I still have my laptop up because of the battery power, but my internet is down and so is everything else.  We live in an old house and the wiring is put together pretty strangely compared to modern wiring.  Ends up my husband popped the breaker while he was replacing the housing for the wall switch.  That breaker not only had the dining room on it, but also the rooms where I work and the internet box is located at.  After a little while everything was fixed and power was restored.  I was mainly upset because he did not mention that anything he was doing was going to shut off the power and by the time it came up back that particular job no longer had work available when I could log back in.

This is just one example of how things completely out of your control can mess with your perfectly planned day.  Weather, accidents and family emergencies can pop up at any time during any day.  Being able to be flexible can really help keep your sanity.  One key thing to remember is to read over the policies of the companies that you work for in regards to when you are unable to work.  For some companies this will not be an issue as you are able to work whenever you have time, but for others if you have a schedule you will want to contact them in case of a long phone or internet outage.
